The puffin season started yesterday, May 1st. The weather was too rough for Rósin to go out whale watching, so we used that boat for the first puffin tours and sailed to Lundey island where we found loads of puffins at first, and then very few later on. Then we sailed to Akurey island were there were much more of them around.

Now Old Skúli is on a roll and we’ve sailed to Akurey today with good results. It’s a little windy today but the weather is getting better in the next days. It’s great to go out there again, and meet those funny little birds in their natural environment :)

Puffin tours run five times daily, the first tour being at 8:30 in the morning, and then 10:30, 12:30, 14:30 and 16:30. Price is only 4000 ISK or 24 EUROS.

Also started are our daily Sea Angling tours which run every day at 18:00 in May, and then at 9:00 and 18:00 starting on June 1st.

Everything is going according to plan, and we’re very excited. Psyched even.

The picture above was taken in Akurey island last summer by our guide Magnús.

Sperm whales in Steingrímsfjörður

by magnus on April 25, 2012

A total of ten sperm whales were sighted two days ago, travelling together deep into the fjord of Steingrímsfjörður in the Westfjords of Iceland. Sperm whales are often sighted there but it’s unusual to see so many together. Jón Halldórsson postman in Hólmavík sighted them as he was sailing there and he sailed with them into the fjord, all the while the whales were about 20 meters from the boat.

He shot this picture on the occasion.

More pics can be seen here.

2012 whale watching schedule started today. During April we run the tours every day at 10:00 o’clock, on the dot. Conservation of auks

January 9, 2012

A commitee working for the Ministry of Environment has suggested that five types of auks should be conserved for the next five years at least. This would mean a total ban on hunting and any other harvesting such as egg picking. The razorbills, puffins and three types of guillemots are currently having heaps of trouble, [...]

Searching for the past

December 19, 2011

It has long been speculated that a few hundred years ago the sea level around Reykjavik was lower than it is today, or rather that the ground stood higher and that the area on which the city resides is in fact slowly sinking. Roughly we believe the difference to be about 2 meters since the [...]
